26 July - 8 August: Camping Havenweg

On Saturday 25 July at 24 hrs Camping Havenweg will be opened, a temporary autonomous zone inside Doel arts village. During two weeks, every creative visitor will be welcome around the clock on the empty spaces in Havenweg (click on plan for enlargement). In an interactive way, we will jointly build and expand the camping place and gradually turn it into a multidimensional meeting place.  Every contribution, overnight stay, or new settlement will strengthen the project. We will recycle waste materials found in Doel and give them a second life, thus paying a tribute to a positive and constructive way of thinking.  The project will die a noisy death on 8 August at midnight, the festive weekend in Doel. For the most recent information, check http://twitter.com/CampingHavenweg.

Important News in June/July 2010

Toward the end of June, Eddy Bruyninckx, the director of the Antwerp Port Authority, admitted for the first time ever in the media that the port will not need a new container terminal -- which would wipe Doel off the map for ever -- for many more years, thus making the government's plans to destroy the village anyway all the more senseless in the eyes of public opinion.

On 13 July, the media reported that the Court of Appeal confirmed an earlier ruling by the court of first instance that the destruction of Doel was/is against the law. The court also extended the current inhabitants' right to live in Doel until next Spring.

8 August: Consecration of the Scheldt and Doel Festivities

On Sunday, 8 August the annual consecration of the River Scheldt and the 36th Doel festivities will take place in the village of Doel.  Holy Mass will begin at 14 hrs and will be immediately followed by the boat consecration ceremony on the Scheldt.  This year, the authorities of Beveren did not grant any subsidy for the organization of the festivities in Doel. The remaining inhabitants and sympathizers are organizing the event with their own means: a jumble sale and handycrafts market, music, and a poetry, photography and national heritage show in the chapel.
