KunstDoel Inside: 10 Famous Artists Support Doel

OPENING: 2 May, 11 hrs,
Doel community center (Hooghuisstraat)
please be there

In March/April 2009, 10 internationally renowned artists are coming to Doel to create a work of art inside the houses of 10 villagers. With this symbolic action, these artists want to express their solidarity with the villagers who would like to stay in Doel. The artwork is meant to protect the houses against demolition.

Antwerp-based artist Guillaume Bijl, who was granted a solo exhibition in the museum of modern art in Ghent (SMAK) last year, coordinates this project with the logistical support of KunstDoel.

On 27 March, Guillaume and his Antwerp friends Fred Bervoets, Koen van den Broek, and Jan Decleir came to Doel to make their works. Katie Heck, a former German student of Fred Bervoets who is still living in Antwerp, accompanied them to get to know the village. She will return later to make her own painting. (view pictures >>>)

Guillaume invited Mitja Tušek, a Slovenian artist who currently lives and works in Brussels, to Doel on Friday 10 April. Mitja made his work in the house of Marina Apers, a woman who has been campaigning for the survival of Doel for many years. (view pictures >>>)

The five remaining artists -- Jan Van Imschoot, Luc Tuymans, Ria Pacquée, Guy Van Bossche and Katie Heck are still to come.
